When we think of the movements toward self-discovery and personal growth, mostly what comes to mind are mental, emotional, and spiritual in nature. But what about physical self-discovery and personal growth? Yes, of course it’s vastly important to become keenly aware of who you are, what you want in life, your purpose, your strengths and weaknesses. Yes, of course it’s vastly important to deal with your shit from your childhood, forgive your parents for being imperfect, forgive yourself for being imperfect, get through the emotional trauma of all the breakups you’ve had, and probably see a therapist. Yes, of course it’s vastly important (though others will argue with me) to decide which spiritual or philosophical path you identify with and accept life through that lens. However, no matter what you believe – about yourself, the world, the universe – no matter what you’ve gone through, and no matter whether you adhere to a monotheistic, polytheistic, or atheistic belief system, YOU live in a physical body, within a physical world…at least for now. Physicality is the one thing, above all else, that we all have in common. To be human is to inhabit a physical body.
In the world of the physical, self-discovery and personal growth are equally as important as they are in the realm of emotions, intelligence, and spirituality. In fact, some could argue more so. Your body allows you to experience sensations that are yours, and yours alone. So, why not discover how your body works, what it enjoys, and how to provide it with intense pleasure? This is the journey upon which I am about to embark…at least I think that’s what I’m doing.
Yesterday, I posted a film review for A Guide to Your Orgasm, the latest release from The Welcomed Consensus. They’re a group based in San Francisco (of course…where else would such a sex positive group be located?) who is focused on the exploration of the female orgasm. Awesome, right?! Apparently, they liked my film review, because they’ve asked me to participate in their next online sensuality class and review it, too!
When they first called me about it, the academic in me wanted to research this class and see what it’s all about (for those of you who know me, you know I have an addiction to research and education…for those of you who don’t know me, well, there’s my dirty little secret). But, I decided against it. If I’m reviewing the class, I should enter with an open mind, untainted by either positive or negative feedback or information from others. So, in reality, I haven’t the slightest idea what I’m getting myself into, but get ready, because you’re about to experience it with me! And the class starts TODAY! Granted, I have teaching of my own to do this evening at a GrownUpSexEd seminar (it’s a Passion Party! Ahwoohoo!), during the live conference call to kick off the class, so I will be participating in this first week’s lesson via the recorded session posted tomorrow morning. (Thankfully, that’s an option! Otherwise, I would have had to turn down this opportunity!)
The website doesn’t offer much insight into the class, merely boasting: “It has never been easier to explore your sensuality from home in these guided classes. Explore and expand the pleasure in all areas of your life from where ever you may be. Using dialog, coaching and experiential homework these classes are designed for those who want straight-forward winning viewpoints to get more enjoyment out of sex, love and relationships and daily life.” Who doesn’t want to “expand the pleasure in all areas of [their] life”?! Uh…I do! My life is pretty amazing as it is, but better is always an option! So, I’m taking this course and writing about it. (I’m not going to lie…I’m pretty stoked!)
Feel free to ask questions or post comments about this journey. You’re welcome to do so here, or on my Facebook page. Either way, I’ll respond. And if you’d like to check out The Welcomed Consensus, do it! Take the course with me! It’ll be great!
