Cupcake

When is the last time you enjoyed a meal?  I mean REALLY enjoyed a meal?  Or a snack, or beverage, or whatever?  I know I don’t do it often enough.  We’re all so busy and rushed that we eat on the go and while sitting at our desks.  (I can’t tell you the last time I ate at my dining table!)  But food can be a truly sensual experience!

My inspiration for writing this came about two minutes ago.  I was eating a cupcake – the last of a four-pack of dark chocolate peanut butter cup cupcakes from Trader Joe’s.  Not peanut butter cup as in having peanut butter cups in them, but peanut butter cup as in a delicious, melt-in-your-mouth dark chocolate cupcake with a bit of creamy peanut butter inside, topped with a decadent dark chocolate ganache frosting and another dollop of peanut butter.  (If that sounds amazing to you, I urge you to NEVER BUY THEM!  They are addictive!  You will crave them to the point of waking up in the middle of the night and realizing that the world might as well come to an end because you’re out of cupcakes and it’s past 9pm, so Trader Joe’s is closed!)

So, anyway, I was eating my cupcake, and I realized it was the LAST one!  I’m starting a new food plan and exercise regimen in a couple of days, so I won’t be purchasing any more for quite some time.  So, I decided to step back from my desk to revel in the richness and relish the deliciousness of the cupcake.  Granted, it only took me about a minute and a half to eat it – bottom first, with my head tilted back and the cupcake over my face, so as not to drop even one divine morsel, then moving on to the top, with it’s exquisite combination of flavors and textures – but that minute and a half was worth savoring!

The point is, we pay so much attention to everything OUTSIDE of ourselves, that we forget how important the things are that go on INSIDE us.  The next time you come across something delicious, step away from the computer, turn off the television, and put down your phone.  Enjoy what you’re providing for your body!

    cupcakes = noms. i love that you said “food plan” and not “diet.” 🙂

      To me, the word “diet” just means “what you eat.” When people say they’re “on a diet” or that they’re “dieting,” it makes me think, “Well, yeah. Everyone has a diet.” Some choose to restrict themselves to everything they DON’T love from time to time. Others choose to consume 98% foods that would kill them if it weren’t for the other 2%. The word “diet” gets such a bad name, because everyone puts a negative connotation on it due to this culture of thin…thin…THIN!!! But “food plan” seems more logical. I’m planning out my meals for the week, making my grocery list, heading to the store, and preparing what I can ahead of time, so there are no excuses for diverting from the plan. Will there be times when I consume something I hadn’t planned? Yes. I’m sure of it. So, I’ll change the course a little bit. Currently, I’m in the pre-food plan stage, where I’m eating everything in my house in order to get rid of it, so my meals are SUPER weird! I considered skipping this stage and starting the food plan this week, but I’m attending a corporate training event this weekend and our local Passion team meeting is Monday, and we always go out for dinner and drinks after the meeting, so I decided to hold off until Tuesday.
